Sophie Westerlind (b.1985, Stockholm) received her BA from Central Saint Martins in 2011 and her MA from the Royal College of Art, London, in 2013. Her interest in interpreting body language and interpersonal relationships brought her to the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia (MA 2018) in Italy, to specialize in anatomy and the expressive potential of the human body.
Human beings and the locations that bear testimony to an intimate presence are the main themes of her artistic practice. People from her everyday life are a great source of inspiration and one of the themes of Sophie’s current artistic research.
In 2019, Sophie Westerlind was artist in residence at Dolomiti Contemporanee, in Borca di Cadore, Italy. In Italy, a selection of her paintings and drawings were exhibited at the Diocesan Museum in Feltre and at the Forte di Monte Ricco, Pieve di Cadore, in collaboration with Dolomiti Contemporanee.
Sophie Westerlind was awarded the Swedish Royal Court national scholarship for drawing in 2019. She lives and works between Venice and Stockholm and is currently (March-April 2020) part of the online exhibition #ARTISTSINQUARANTINE curated by Giada Pellicari.
