PASSING TIME

"...One paints the beginning
of a certain end.

The other, the end of a
sure beginning."

from "Passing Time" by Maya Angelou.

Zephyr and Maize is pleased to announce a group exhibition "Passing Time: Recent works by women artists". The exhibition presents rarely displayed bodies of work dating from 2016 to 2020 by Katherine Bradford, Sara Anstis, Raya Terran, Sophie Westerlind and Laura Shabott. This selection unites predominantly figurative works in varied media such as oil, gouache, acrylic, pastel and terracotta. Nurtured by an underlying humanist basis and unapologetic assertion of emotion, these works explore themes such as human struggle, family, love, fragility, sensuality and power, along with cultural notions and events of external nature. In every unique case, such themes are reiterated by distinctive artistic language, grounded by knowledge, spontaneity and instinct, and propelled forward by use of colour, inherent qualities of a medium, composition and evocation of light, with narrative structure in  the essence of every work.
