ANNA SHUKEYLO: PROJECT ROOM
6 MAY - 15 SEPTEMBER 2021
" Hudson Heights is the place I call home...Anonymity is scarce on the streets of this tiny oasis set against the backdrop of New York’s busiest borough, as every other neighbour waves hello and calls out my dog’s name while passing by. These friendly daytime interactions juxtapose the inspiration for my work as windows light up in the evening and offer glimpses into private lives. With this flicker of inspiration, I imagine the stories on display. Most pieces in this series are based on what I see and know of life in my own space and my daily domestic experience. I’m captivated by the beauty of glowing lights and dancing shadows that reveal hints of intimate moments and intentions. " - Anna Shukeylo (published in 'Intimacies' , Zephyr and Maize, 2020) .
Zephyr and Maize presents a solo exhibition of work by Anna Shukeylo: Project Room. This is the artist’s third show at the gallery. It brings together mixed media works from the Hudson Heights series (2018-2020), alongside her Occhiolisms (2018-2019), rarely shown three-dimensional objects united by a recurring theme of intimate living spaces.
Domesticity is a key theme in Shukeylo’s recent works. In viewing each painting, one witnesses elusive male and female figurative imagery, the subjects blended into surroundings, marking a further transition to objects with focus on interior, as Shukeylo entices us to pause and take a surreptitious look inside these still yet lived-in spaces, an open invitation to our perceptions in a world of hurried day-to-day interaction.
Through taking over roles of an observer and an outsider, Shukeylo allows daydreams and recollections to narrate voyeuristic glimpses into people's homes, with the spontaneity of this superficial invasion creating forbiddingly thrilling snapshots of the family house as the metaphor of human life. A collection of carefully selected works brings to life visual memories and affective experiences through masterful use of material, texture, form, colour and lighting. Shukeylo depicts interior using recognisable shapes and symbolic imagery, manifesting the touch of sensuality, a residual magic of juxtaposition, vulnerability and exposure.
Anna Shukeylo (b. St. Petersburg, Russia) is a Russian-American artist who lives and works in New York. She graduated from Pratt Institute. Her work has been exhibited throughout New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Indiana, and internationally.
